J. Douglas Matthews

J.Douglas Matthews, 71, of Cleveland passed away, Monday, September 17, 2018 at his home. He was born in Athens but has lived in Cleveland for the past 46 years. He was a 45 year member of Central Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon and was presently serving as Elder and song leader. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served as president of Goodfellows Organization of current and former employees of Bowater Corp for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janice Silvers Matthews of Cleveland; children, Aaron Matthews and wife Celia of Orange Park, FL and Jennifer Meador and husband Wesley of Summerville, SC; grandchildren, Conner, Austin and Morgan Matthews and Gwyneth and Brooke Meador; siblings, Irene Hayes of Oak Ridge and Lloyd Matthews and wife Marjorie of Sweetwater; sister-in-law, Barbara Matthews of Taylors, SC: several nieces and nephews and special friends, Lonnie and Margaret Jones of Cleveland.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Central Church of Christ with Minister Tom Harrison officiating. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Mike Keith, Kevin Gardener, Keith Welder, Tom Butler, Lonnie Jones and Winston Stringfield serving as pallbearers. The service will conclude with military honors.

His family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Fike-Randolph and Son Funeral Home.
