Elsie Ann Allison Johnson, 68, of Cleveland, passed away Tuesday May 9, 2017, in a local hospital from a hard-fought battle with strokes and cancer. She was a retired English teacher from the Bradley County School system. Her 35-year career spanned both junior high and high school as well as college where she shared her love of literature with all her students. Elsie enjoyed meeting with the retired English teachers from Bradley Central for their monthly book club. She loved planting spring flowers and watching the birds from the front window of her home, but more than anything she loved time spent with her only granddaughter, Sophie.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Lacy Allison and brother, Kenneth Allison.
Survivors include her loving husband of 46 years, Jerry Wayne Johnson; daughter, Jennifer Leigh Johnson; and granddaughter, Sophia Grace Smith, all of Cleveland. Also surviving is Elsie’s mother, Geneva Allison, a resident of Garden Plaza. Family members in Mississippi include sister-in-law, Patsy Allison; nephew, Jon and Belinda Allison; niece, Angela and Morris Blount.
A special thank you to long time church friends Wanda Calfee, Deloris Watson and Phyllis Wright who kept in touch throughout Elsie’s battle; also, Bradley English teachers Sandra Higgins and Deborah Holland who often stayed by Elsie’s side.
The service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2017 in the chapel of Fike-Randolph & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at a later date at the family cemetery at the United Methodist Church in Tippo, MS.
Her family will receive friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service.
The family requests memorials be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 or Spring Place Church of God of Prophecy Building Fund, 2600 Spring Place Road, Cleveland TN 37323 or the charity of your choice.
