Jewel S. Murphy, born in Cleveland, on June 27, 1928, parted from her loved ones on February 22, 2014. Her family and friends can rest in the knowledge that her absence from this world is presence with the Lord. Jewel had careers in both the restaurant business and in real estate, and her hard work and enterprising spirit made her a success in both. She taught everyone around her to look to the future with hope, work in the present with diligence, and to give generously, have love, faith and happiness in the life she had been given. Preceding her in death are Jack Murphy, father of her children; mother, Ruby Helton; brother, Bill Southerland; brother-in-law, Dennis Ring and cousin, Barbara Byrd. She is survived by her three children: sons, Tom Murphy of Cleveland and Alex Murphy of Chattanooga; daughter, Janice Harris and husband, Don of Cleveland; grandchildren: Zachary Murphy, Elise Murphy, Alan Murphy, Michael Retzlaff, Polly Loudermilk, Tera Pierce and husband Josh, Morgan Bracy and Cortney Bailey and husband Ryan; great-grandchildren: Keane Jordan, Caleb and Callie Pierce, Addison Bracy and Caroline and Hattie Bailey; two sisters, Joy Ring of Phoenix, AZ, and Betty Neal and husband Kenny of La Habra, CA; and best friend, Sandy Hughes. Also surviving her are special cousins, Wendall Richardson, Vickie Goins, Judy Lewis, and Patsy King; nephew, Mike Southerland; close friends, Shirley Trotter and Sharon Westfield, and many other friends she cared about; sister-in-law, Alice Southerland; many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and so many children of cousins, they are too numerous to count, but Jewel loved them and they loved her; and former husband, John Bullard of Chattanooga. Fellowship with family and friends will be held at Fike Funeral Home from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, with a Celebration in Memory of Jewel following at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Herb Conley officiating. The family suggests that memorials may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga. We invite you to send a message of condolence and view the Murphy family guestbook at www.fikefh.com
