Roy Barber, 91, a resident of Cleveland passed away at after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at his home. He was born and grew up during the Great Depression in Shelby County, TN. Roy and his uncle, Robert Barber went to work for the Civilian Conservation Corp. in Pikeville, TN. In 1939 the Barber family moved to Bradley County. Roy soon joined the family in Bradley County working for Hardwick Farms and soon got a job with Hardwick Stove Company. Shortly after beginning at Hardwick Stove, he was drafted to serve in World War II. During the war he served with the 8th Army Air Force, 466th Bomb Group in England. After the war he came home to his family in Cleveland and returned to work at Hardwick Stove (Whirlpool). He retired from Whirlpool in 1987 after 46 years of service. He was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Clinta May Barber; step-mother, Irene Barber; brothers, Thomas Barber, Jewel Barber, Riley Barber, Bill Milner, Acie D. Milner and sisters, Virginia Barber Tollison and Mildred Milner Clark. Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Evelyn Scoggins Barber; daughters, Nancy M. (Conrad) Duke, Beverly A. (Bill) Flowers and Joyce L. (Richard) Bennett, all of Cleveland; son, Gerald "Jerry" (Elaine) Barber of Englewood; 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Reed Barber of Eads, TN and special friends and neighbors, Mae, E.L. and Josh Hindman. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2012 in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with Minister Jeff Archey and Minister Bill Maynard officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors and Rodney Bennett, Roger Bennett, Chris Flowers, Gerald Barber, Jr., Kenneth Flowers and Rodney Casteel serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Casteel, Randell Bennett, Danny Scoggins and Donnie Ray Scoggins. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the funeral home.
