William Henry Still, Jr., 83, died Sunday, March 4, 2012 in the tender care of Hospice. Bill was a member of North Cleveland Church of God and a member of the Unity Sunday school class. He was also a member of the Cleveland Lodge #134 Free and Accepted Masons for 50 years. He was a graduate of Bradley Central High School, class of 1946. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He also served on the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea under the command of Admiral Richard E. Byrd, during his historic exploration of Antarctica in 1946. Bill earned his "pollywog" recognition for his first crossing of the equator during this tour of duty. Bill had a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors. In 1960 he was one of two founding members of the Highland Sportsman Club of Chattanooga and served two terms as president. He also was a member of the Polk County Bear and Boar Hunting Club. He was a well known and accomplished hunter and fisherman. His love of the outdoors often took him to remote locations including Africa for a photo safari. Bill also had a love of gardening, both flowers and vegetables; this interest led to the earning of Master Gardner certification. Bill worked for DuPont for 34 years and retired in 1983 as a supervisor in the millwright department. Following retirement, he turned his energies to woodcarving, including Santa Claus and wildlife figures. These Carvings continue to be enjoyed by family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Still, Sr. and Margaret Josephine Jones Still and his brother, David Lynn Still. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Nora Fetzer Still; his beloved daughter, Beverly Still; nephew, David K. Still and wife Cathy; great niece, Mary and great nephew, Sam. A celebration of the life of William Henry Still will be Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with Pastor Travis Porter officiating. Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
