Mary Gail Whelan Smith, 90, a resident of Cleveland passed away peacefully Monday, June 27, 2011. She was a resident of Wellington Place of Cleveland for the past 10 years. Mary was born September 9, 1920 in Fifield, WI, the daughter of George H. and Mary Eleanor Whelan, of Bogalusa, LA. She met and married L.L. (Smitty) Smith, Jr. and lived in Bogalusa, LA until they moved to Cleveland, TN in 1954. They settled in Charleston, TN where Smitty worked for Bowater. They moved again to Cleveland, where she resided until 1999. She lived with her son in Roanoke, VA until she returned to Cleveland in 2001. She was a parishioner of St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, James A. Whelan and William Wyman Whelan. She is survived by her son, Lawrence Craig Smith and wife, Mary C. Smith; grandson, David L. Smith and wife, Susan; granddaughter Christine G. Traubel and husband, Douglas B. Trabel; great-grandchildren, Matthew J. Smith, Nicholas L. Smith, Alexis G. Traubel and Chase E. Traubel. Also surviving are nieces, Kay Hill, Ann Robbins, Patricia Bourg and Terry Gomez; nephews, Wym Whelan, Jimmy Whelan, Mike Jung and Father Michael Jung, OSB and numerous grand nieces and nephews. Mary is also survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Jung and Jean Whelan, both of Baton Rouge, LA. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church with Father Peter Iorio presiding. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with a white dove release ceremony. The family will receive friends from 9:00- 10:00 Thursday at the church prior to the service.
