Shirley Joe Hardwick

Shirley Joe White Hardwick, 83, a resident of Cleveland passed away Sunday, December 5, 2010 after an extended illness. Long-time member of Broad Street United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, she was nursery superintendent for over 20 years. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Shirley was born in Stilwell, OK, on December 11, 1926 to Joseph Minter White and Elaine Whitaker White. She was raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas until the family moved to Maryville, TN. She graduated from Maryville High School and attended Maryville College. The Whites then moved to Cleveland in 1945. Shirley married John H. Hardwick of Cleveland on December 11, 1946. They were married 35 years until his death on October 18, 1981, and then she took over the ownership and management of Hardwick Store, Inc until 1991. Shirley loved traveling, playing bridge, gardening, music and opera, doll house miniatures and square-dancing. She was a member and officer of the Cherokee Garden Club, Cleveland Music Club and Cleveland Cotillion Club among other organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Minter White and Elaine Whitaker White; sister, Mary Elaine White Moore (husband Ben); husband, John H. Hardwick; sisters-and brothers-in-law, Frank and Sue (Walker) Hardwick and George L. III and Barbara (Lyle) Hardwick. Survivors include her daughter, Judy Schnauffer and husband William of Rockford, IL; son, Joe Hardwick and wife Mary of Dunwoody, GA; daughter, Mary Catherine Nichols of Asheville, NC, and Jane Triplett and husband Rufus of Roswell, GA; grandchildren, Katherine Schnauffer of Cleveland, Will Schnauffer and wife Jean of Fort Smith, Ark, Mike Hoskins and wife Tara of Dublin, GA, Kinsley and Paige Hardwick of Dunwoody, GA, Mary Margaret Little and husband Sam VeuCasovic of Westminster, CO, Laura Little of Athens, GA and Susan Little of Cincinnati, OH; great-grandchildren, Blake and Hunter Hoskins and Mya Schnauffer and various nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at the Broad Street United Methodist Church with the Reverend Reed Shell and the Reverend Debbie Stokes officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church prior to the service.
