Verna Martin Rogers

Verna Martin Rogers, 94, resident of Cleveland passed away Saturday, August 21, 2010 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was a longtime member of Stuart Park Baptist Church where she and her husband were charter members. She was born in the small mountain community of Sherwood, TN August 13, 1916. She grew up in McDonald, TN and was a graduate of Bradley Central High School. Mrs. Rogers was known for her skills as a seamstress and as a great cook and homemaker. She had a "green thumb" and enjoyed growing many varieties of plants, including herbs, roses, wildflowers and more. She was interested in history and loved nothing better than traveling. She worked for many years at Cabin Craft and Davis Rug. She retired from American Uniform at the age of 65 and went to work at Bradley Memorial Hospital where she worked in the Dietary Department until the age of 75. She was known for her punctuality and hard work. Her loving husband, Frank H. Rogers preceded her in death after 53 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo and Clara Martin; two sisters, Louise Snow and Rosella Smith; three brothers, Charles Martin, Clyde Martin and Clarence(Buck)Martin and great grandson, Shad Abbott. Survivors include three children, son, Frank Rogers, Jr., and wife Jean of LaFayette, GA, daughter, Clara Wimberly and husband Wayne of Cleveland and Janice Duff and husband Bill of Cleveland; seven grandchildren; two step grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with Elvis Brandon officiating. Mrs. Rogers' grandsons will serve as pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Fike Funeral Home.
