Cecil H. Stanbery, D.D.S., 81, a resident of Cleveland passed away Saturday, August 14, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family. He was a lifelong member of Broad Street United Methodist Church and a member of the Kelly class his entire adult life. Dr. Stanbery attended public schools in Bradley County, but due to illness, he spent his senior year in Florida and graduated from St. Petersburg High School. He received his Bachelor and Masters degrees from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and his D.D.S. from University of Tennessee Dental School at Memphis in 1958. He established his dental practice in Cleveland in 1958. In 2008, after 50 years of practice he was recognized as a Golden Graduate by the University of Tennessee at Memphis. He was a member of the Third District Dental Society, Cleveland Dental Society, TN Dental Association, American Dental Association, Pierre Fauchard Academy and Honorary Dental Fraternity. He was elected by his peers to the International College of Dentists which he was inducted into in Ottawa, Canada in September 1996. Since 1958, he was a member of the Cleveland Rotary Club and at the time of his death he was Rotary Member #1, signifying the longest continuous membership in the social club. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, where he was the Ocoee District Commissioner; Junior Achievement; Council of the United Services; United Way; and Salvation Army, where he served on the Board of Directors. An early supporter of Cleveland State Community College, he taught Geography at the college from 1968-1978, and served many years on the Cleveland State Foundation Board of Directors. He regularly "lectured" his young patients on the values of an education and was pleased to have established the Cecil and Annette Stanbery Scholarship at Cleveland State. He was a member of the TN Society Sons of the Revolution for more than 50 years and served as President of the Chattanooga Chapter. He was currently a member of the Col. Evan Shelby Chapter of Bradley County. He was an avid hunter and lifelong member of the National Rifle Association. He was a lifelong Republican. He began his GOP activities as a college student at UT Knoxville, working with the Roy Acuff for Governor Campaign; attended the 1952 Chicago National GOP Convention as a Senator Taft for President worker; was active in all major Tennessee Republican Campaigns including Howard Baker, Winfield Dunn, Bill Brock, Lamar Baker, Lamar Alexander, Bill Frist, Fred Thompson, Bob Corker, Zach Wamp and other district and state campaigns; Vice-Chairman of the Bradley County Republican Party from 1970-1974; Chairman of the Bradley County Republican Party from 1974-1978; Third District Republican Party Chairman from 1970-1998; Bradley County Nixon Campaign Manager in 1968; Bradley County Ford Campaign Manager in 1976; member of Tennessee Electoral College in 1980, casting his ballot for President Ronald Reagan; Republican State Executive Committeeman from 1978-2006; alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1984, 1988 and 1992; Capitol Club member for approximately 40 years; 3rd District Republican Statesman of the year in 1997; Bradley County Ralph York Memorial Republican Man of the Year in 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. William Cecil Stanbery and Etta Moyers Henley Stanbery; infant brother; brothers-in-law, William Travis Akin, Charles Strong and Don Stinnett; mother-in-law, Cloyce Richardson Jenkins and her husband, James Herman Jenkins and father-in-law, Raymond Richardson. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Annette Richardson Stanbery; son, Dr. William Cecil Stanbery II and wife, Rose Wilson Stanbery; son, Dr. John Samuel Stanbery and wife, Lisa Lambert Stanbery; sister, Etta Bernita Aiken of Athens, GA; granddaughter, Alexandra Cecile Stanbery; grandson, Ian Samuel Stanbery; step-grandsons, Matt Slifko and Chad Slifko; step-granddaughter, Cecily Slifko, all of Cleveland; sister-in-law, Barbara Jenkins Fawcett and husband Travis Fawcett of Hickory Valley, TN; sister--in-law,Carol Richardson Strong of Little Rock, Arkansas; sister-in-law, Ruth Jenkins Stinnett of Memphis; brother-in-law, Jamieson Jenkins and wife, Jean Jenkins of Somerville; first cousin, Morgan Henley Biggs of Knoxville and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Broad Street United Methodist Church with the Reverends Reed Shell and Debbie Stokes officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Cemetery with Kim Randolph, Kim Frady, Fred Carder, David Bryan, Dr. Paul McCord, Jeff Yarber, David Kibble and Bob Jenkins will serve as pallbearers. J.C. Haun, Michael Willis, Jonathan Cantrell, Steve Crump and the Cleveland Rotary Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. His family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Fike Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
