Ruth H. Hughes, 98, a lifelong resident of Charleston, passed away Friday, April 9, 2010 in a local hospital. She was a member of Charleston First Baptist Church. Mrs. Hughes was a loving mother and very proud of her five wonderful children. She loved all of her grandchildren unconditionally. She had great pride in her appearance and thoroughly enjoyed being with people. She had traveled every state plus Africa, Australia, Holy Lands, Alaska and Hawaii twice. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.L. Hughes, Sr.; parents, C.C. Hambright and Rachael Eldridge Hambright; four brothers and two sisters. Survivors include her children: H.L. Hughes, Jr., Bill and Grace Hughes, Virginia Jo Lyle, Bob Hughes and friend Chris Greene and John and Alice Miller; 10 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and many loved ones. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with the Reverend Kenneth Isabill and Reverend Brian Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Dewey Hughes, Shane Hughes, Jeff Spence, Rusty Powell, Bill Lyle and Ray Bean serving as pallbearers. Jerry Freeman, S.P. Jones, Carl Colloms, J.B. Crittenden and David Ivy will serve as honorary pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
