Mary Sue Jones Swiger, 77, a resident of Cleveland, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 15, 2008, as the results of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was the daughter of the late Sibyl Gladis Debnam Jones and Eugene Selwin Jones. She was preceded in death by her son, Stanley Randolph Swiger; three brothers: Norman Jones, Loran Jack Jones and Wesley Jones; and two sisters:
Evelyn Shipp and Mildred Harper. She graduated summa cum laude from Lee College with a degree in education.
She finished first in her class at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, when receiving her masters degree.
She retired in 1996 after 26 years as an English teacher at Bradley Central High School. She also taught one year at Blue Springs Elementary. She was an active member of the South Cleveland Church of God. She had served as a Sunday school teacher, a Sunday greeter and on various boards.
She was a member of the Prime Timers. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, the Rev. Alois M. Swiger of Cleveland; three sons and wives: Steven and Bobbie Swiger of Cleveland, Harold Eugene and Rhonda Swiger of Hamilton, Ohio, Kenneth Wayne and Becky Swiger of Lenior City; two daughters and son-in-law: Gwenda Sue Swiger and Melissa (Missy) and Lynn Rice; seven grandchildren: Wendy Diane Eaton and husband, Harold, of Niota, Rebecca Pressley and husband, Steven, of Cleveland, Amanda Swiger of Lenior City, Jamison Swiger and wife, Tara, of Johnson City, Alexander Swiger of Lenior City, Robert Rice and Jackson Rice, both of Cleveland; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters: Ruth Kiesling and Rachel Cobb, both of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at Fike Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Moody and Dr. Carl Hobbs officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Matt Howell, Anthony McDowell, Mitch Ellis, Jake Pressley, Alex Swiger, Jamison Swiger, Lynn Rice and Steve Pressley serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Robby Rice, Jackson Rice and members of the Prime Timers.
The service will conclude with a white dove release.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Sunday.
