Gladys Newman Stone, 94, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Monday, June 18, 2007 at her residence. She was a life-long resident of the Black Fox Community and a member of Black Fox United Methodist Church. Mrs. Stone was a former elementary school teacher, giving 39 years to the Bradley County School System, most of this time being spent at Black Fox Elementary School. She is lovingly remembered by her many former students as a caring, strict, but understanding teacher.
Family always came first, and she was the model of the devoted wife, mother and grandmother, always sharing a warm smile and serving all with an intense interest in family activities. She is remembered for her culinary abilities and the quilts she lovingly made and gave to each family member. The family meals were artistic creations; inspired by her love for her family.
Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her husband, Elgie J. Stone; three brothers: Raleigh, Willis and Jake Newman; and sister, Hazel Henry.
She is survived by three sons: E. Ben Stone and wife, Dee of Ooltewah, James "Jim" Stone of Cleveland and Gary N. Stone and wife, Darlene also of Cleveland; four grandchildren: John Stone, Charles Stone and Lee Ann Frazier all of Cleveland and Ben Stone of Chattanooga; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with the Reverend Paul Miracle officiating. The interment memorial will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2007 in the Triplett Family Cemetery behind her home at Black Fox with her grandsons and nephews serving as pallbearers.
