John Walker North

November 11, 1916 — March 16, 2008

John Walker North passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008 in the Western Kentucky Veterans Center. He was born in Stewart County, TN in the community of Indian Mound on November 11, 1916. He grew up in Chattanooga and Chattanooga Valley and attended Chattanooga Valley High School.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and was aboard the USS Honolulu when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. He is a veteran of numerous naval battles of the Pacific including Leyte Gulf and Tassfaronga. He achieved the rank of Machinist's Mate First Class before returning to Chattanooga Valley at the end of World War II. He married Mary Catherine LeCroy of Chattanooga Valley in 1947.

Mr. North worked for Southern Chemical Cotton Company, and Hercules Corporation in Chattanooga. After moving to Cleveland, TN, he worked for Rust Engineering, Olin Corporation and M&M Mars as an instrumentation designer. He earned the designation of professional engineer. He retired in 1987, and has resided in Henderson, KY since 2001.

Mr. North was a member of the Instrumentation Society of America, the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association and the American Legion. He attended Flintstone Baptist Church in Chattanooga Valley, TN, First Baptist Church in Cleveland, TN and First Baptist Church in Henderson, KY.

He is preceded in death by his parents John G. North and Annis McGregor North, and his brothers Alfred North, Paul L. North and David M. North.

He is survived by his wife Catherine L. North, Henderson, KY; his daughters Annis North Shaver and her husband John, of Dayton, Ohio; Leslie North Hall and her husband, Ben, of Henderson, Kentucky; granddaughter, Elizabeth "Libby" Hall of Hoboken, New Jersey; his sister Doris North Tatum of Rossville, GA and his brother James H. North of Chattanooga, TN.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Reverend John M. North officiating. Military honors will conclude the service. Honorary pallbearers will be the Pearl Harbor Survivors.

His family will receive friends Tuesday, March 18, 2008 from 5-8 p.m. at Fike Funeral Home.
