William G. Nichols

William G. Nichols, age 89, passed away Thursday, December 6, 2006 at his residence in Calhoun, TN. He was a loving husband and loving father. Mr. Nichols was a member and deacon at Henegar Baptist Church for thirty-three years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Calhoun. He was employed at Bowater Corporation as a pipe fitter for twenty-four years. Mr. Nichols served as a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. During this time he was engaged in three major battles: the Invasion of Holland, the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion. During the war, he was awarded a Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster and certificate of merit for outstanding duties. He was missing in action for four months and served in five countries. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Harrison Nichols and Thurler Bell Fletcher Nichols; and son, Jonathan Kent Nichols.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Blackwell Nichols; children: Billy Eugene Nichols and Carol Hawkins Miller all of Calhoun, TN; two grandchildren: Misty Senters and Nicholas S. Hawkins; three great grandchildren; one brother, Stanley Nichols of Rossville, GA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, 2006 in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with Chaplain Clinton Riddle and Reverend James Hicks officiating. Interment will follow at Calhoun Cemetery with military honors. Gary Sweeton, Stephen Chrisman, Ricky Chrisman, Kurt Rodgers, George Varnell, Jim David Shelton and Jake Carr will be serving as pallbearers.
