Efrain Guillén Bain Johnson, Bain, 72, went to be with the Lord on October 4, 2007 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Michoacan, Mexico, later moving to Torreon, Coahuila where he was active in the youth group at First Baptist Church in that city. It was there that he met the Cecil Johnsons who were serving with the Baptist Foreign Board. They become his second parents. Later, when his sister Susan could not say "Efrain," he became "Bain".
Bain graduated from the American High School in Torreon, East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas, and received his M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He also received an MA degree from Sam Houston University in Nacodoches, Texas and UT in Knoxville. He was privileged to study one year at the Baptist Seminary in Zurich, Switzerland.
He began his teaching career at Tyler Junior College in Texas, coming to Georgia where his family lived and teaching at Murray County High School. He taught several years at Dalton Junior College, and then complete 32 years of teaching at Cleveland State Community College. While in Chatsworth, he enjoyed pastoring Cisco Baptist Church in Cisco, Georgia.
Bain was always involved in teaching in his local church and doing all kinds of local and foreign mission work. Bible Study and Missions were his life while being faithful for many years in the First Baptist Church in Cleveland. He was known by many for hosting Mexican dinners in his home, which was always open to his friends, who loved him dearly. Many said that Bain introduced them to foreign missions.
Bain is survived by his devoted wife, Victoria Hardwick of Cleveland; his daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Ray Ledford of Cleveland; son, David Guille'n of Knoxville; grandson, Scott Ledford. Also surviving are his parents, Dot and Cecil Johnson of Dalton, Georgia, his sisters, Susan and her husband, Lewis Taylor of Ringgold, Georgia, and Jeanne Varnell of Cleveland. He enjoyed his nieces and nephews very much. His Mexican family was special to him-Marta, Eugenia, and Luis, along with their children. One special friend, John Miles, meant so much to Bain. He claimed him as his special "brother".
Services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Broad Street United Methodist Church with Reverend Andy Ferguson and Reverend Debbie Stokes officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Cemetery.
His family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at Fike Funeral Home.
