John Hayes Harris, age 86, lifelong resident of Birchwood, passed away on Tuesday in a Chattanooga hospital. He was a member of Birchwood Baptist Church and the Limestone Masonic Lodge #176 in Birchwood. He was a medic in the U.S. Army during WWII, and served as postmaster at the Birchwood Post Office for 29 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Cora Hayes Harris, and one sister, Maxine Harris.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Tommy Harris of Birchwood; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Hubert Stuckey of Georgetown; one grandson, Matthew John Stuckey of Georgetown; two sisters, Gertrude Smith of Collegedale and Christine Vaughn of Dayton; one brother, Harold Dewillis Harris of Dayton; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will he conducted on Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Powell officiating. Interment will follow at McInturf Cemetery in Birchwood, TN. The service will conclude with a white dove release ceremony.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3-7 at the funeral home followed by a Masonic service at 7 p.m.
