Clifford Barrett, 83, son of the late Anna B. and Walter A. Barrett, passed away at his home on August 27, 2008. He was born and raised in Cleveland and joined the Navy during World War II at the age of 18. During the war he served on three different LST's participating in the D-Day Invasion and the North Africa/Italian campaigns. After the war was over he served on many different kinds of ships. While on aircraft carriers he went as far north as the Arctic and as far south as the Antarctic and visited many different countries and ports of call in between. He retired from the Navy at his last duty station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1964. Upon returning to Cleveland he worked at the Cleveland Police Department as a patrolman, then a detective for five years. He then worked security for the Cleveland Enamel Plant and Maytag until retirement in 1990. Along with his best friend and cousin, E.K. Davis, he was an avid fisherman all of his life.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Barrett Bradam; 2 sisters: Margaret Miller and Pauline Sullivan.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Ryan Barrett of Cleveland; daughter, Sandra Barrett Rhodes; son and daughter-in-law, Clifford O. and Ira Jean Barrett; 3 grandchildren: Jeanette Bradam Silver, Treena Rhodes Wilson and Jonathon Barrett; 2 great grandchildren: Megan Teeter and Ashley Silver; 2 brothers and wives: Walter (Dub) and Faye Barrett, Tom (Suds) and Joan Barrett; 1 sister, Wanda Donahe all of Cleveland and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 30, 2008 in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with Rev. Johnny McGowan, Tommy Barrett and Treena Rhodes Wilson.
His family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2008 at the funeral home.
