Betty W. Behling, 96, of Cleveland died November 1, 2021 at her home. She was born January 25, 1925 in Mount Carroll, ILL. She graduated valedictorian from Mount Carroll High School and attended Shimer College in Mount Carroll.
In 1942, while working for the Carroll County Ration Board, she was recruited by the FBI to work in Washington D.C. as a “Hoover Girl”. At that time, she met her future husband, Lt. August (Gus) Henry Behling, Jr., at a military dance.
During the course of her 69 year marriage, she lived in Louisiana, Texas, England, and Norway while her husband worked as a civil engineer for Humble Oil, Behling and Pollick Engineer’s, and Statoil of Norway. While living in Norway, she was elected President of the Petroleum Women’s Club in Stavanger. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and was an avid Duplicate Bridge player.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Behling Gillis (husband Robert Burris, Sr.) of Cleveland and her son, Richard Lowell Behling (wife Debbie) of Sugar Land, TX.
Betty’s ashes will be interred alongside her husband’s (who died in 2013) at the National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
The family extends their gratitude to the caring staff and caregivers at both Garden Plaza of Cleveland and Hospice of Chattanooga-Cleveland.
