Charles Lynn Gobble, 97, of Cleveland, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 8, 2024.
Preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Barger Gobble; grandchildren, Addison Jewell and Grant Steven Gobble; great-grandson, Hayes Matthew Dodson; parents, Clyde and Lucile Taylor Gobble; grandparents, James L. and Ellen Trotter Gobble and James L. and Clementine Felker Taylor, Sr. and brothers, Harry Gobble and his wife Vera Grantham Gobble and Joe Gobble and his wife Robbie Withrow Gobble.
Survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Myra Elizabeth and Stewart Russell (Rusty) Patterson of Athens, TN, daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Lynn and Ian Wayne Harper of Cleveland and son and daughter-in-law, Kirk Steven and Brittney Ann Maples Gobble of Cleveland; granddaughter, Margaret (Maggie) Elizabeth Patterson Dodson and her husband, Matthew Kirksey Dodson and their daughter, Blythe Elizabeth Dodson and son, Samuel Hayes Dodson of Dallas, TX; granddaughters, Molly Katherine Patterson (Kate Ripperger) of Ennis, MT, Katherine Elizabeth Harper (Porter Ownbey) of Soddy Daisy, TN, and Allie Margaret Harper (Phillip Zeller) of Chicago, IL; grandson, Britton Samuel Gobble of Cleveland, TN, sister-in-law, Patsy Styles Barger of Cleveland, TN, several nieces and nephews and long-time friend, Jane Gilliland Giles & her family.
Lynn was born on May 28, 1927, to Clyde and Lucile Taylor Gobble in Cleveland, TN. He attended Arnold Memorial Grammar School in Cleveland until his family moved to Knoxville in 1941 to open Gobble Feed and Seed. He attended Christenberry Junior High and Knoxville High School until he was drafted into the Army in August of 1945. He held the classification of Finance Clerk and was honorably discharged from the Army Air Force in December 1946 at the rank of Corporal. He then completed his high school education before enrolling at the University of Tennessee- Knoxville in 1947 to study Transportation. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After graduating from UT in 1952 with a degree in Business Administration, he was employed by Fraser-Brace and Roane Anderson in Calhoun, TN, as an expediter during the original construction of Bowater. He married Allie Jewell Barger on January 22, 1954, and went to work for Bowater Southern the same year. He retired as Purchasing and Stores Manager in 1993 after 38 years of service.
Lynn was an avid Tennessee Volunteers fan, attending his first football game in 1942 and faithfully cheering on the Big Orange as a season ticket holder for 72 years. He was dedicated to researching and preserving the family histories for his children, grandchildren and the generations to come. Every summer he grew the tastiest tomatoes and made the best homemade ice cream to be enjoyed by his family and friends.
He previously attended Washington Pike Methodist Church in Knoxville, TN, and Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Cleveland. Since 1989 he was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee and treasurer and on many other committees.
The family will receive friends on Monday, June 17, 2024, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church at 3425 N Ocoee Street, Cleveland, TN 37312. A service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, also at First United Methodist Church, with Andrew Lay and Curt McKee officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Cleveland. Pallbearers are Steve Barger, Bobby Burns, Matt Dodson, Mike Gobble, Jim Knowles, Porter Ownbey, Phillip Zeller and honorary pallbearer, Britton Gobble. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank Renee Collins of At Home Primary Care, the staff and nurses of Caris Healthcare and his many wonderful caregivers including, Lynn Baker, Ashley Branham, Dorothy Foster, Lori Freeman, Sandy Glover and Linda Lauderdale.
