Mr. George Robert Mayo, of Austria formerly of Cleveland, Tennessee passed away Saturday, November 16, 2024. He was born on July 21, 1936, in Lebanon, Virginia. He moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee at the age of 5 in 1941 with his family, then later moving to Cleveland in 1950 where he spent the rest of his life. He was a graduate of Bradley Central High School. He studied voice at Lee University. George was a member of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church where he sang with the choir until ill health prevented this. He served as the music director at the First Baptist Church in Benton from 1965 to 1975. He also sang with Broad Street United Methodist and the First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland for many years. George retired from Magic Chef/Maytag after 36 years of service. George was very fortunate after retirement to have had the privilege of traveling several European Countries, traveling to Athens, Greece in July of 2007 and the beautiful country of Austria where his adopted son is from. The summer of 2008 traveling to Austria, Paris, France, London, England, in Austria Vienna/Salzburg.
George is preceded in death by his parents, Fletcher Lynn Mayo and Ruth Farmer Mayo; brothers, Richard Lynn Mayo of N. Little Rock, Arkansas, James R (Jim) Mayo of Winter Springs, Florida and Fred W. Mayo, Sr. of Cleveland.
Survived by his adopted son, Andreas (Andy) Hag; brother, William F. (Bill) Mayo of Chattanooga; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Fort Hill Cemetery, Friday, December 20, 2024.
