George Lee Patton, Sr., 71, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his Cleveland, Tennessee home on March 24, 2021. George was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army for 19 years. Six of those years he spent as an Army Recruiter, during which he received his Gold Recruiter’s Badge. A service honoring his life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2021 at the Chattanooga National Veteran’s Cemetery. Chaplain Doug Murray will be officiating. After joining the U.S. Army, George was stationed at Fort Benning, GA, Fort Campbell, KY, and Schofield BRKS, HI. He served as an infantryman, squad leader, instructor and Recruiting Station Commander in Columbus, GA and Cleveland, TN. George attended Troy State University and Cleveland State College where he studied Alcohol and Drug Counseling. After retiring from the U.S. Army, George was employed at the U.S. Post Office in Athens, TN for a number of years. When he wasn’t working, George had a passion for playing men’s league softball and golf. He once served as the National Softball Association Regional Director. He was also an active member and served as chair of the Bradley County Democratic Party. George was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Lee and Sallie Shiver Patton; and two sisters, Betty Wheeler and Elnora Chapman. George is survived by his wife of thirty years, Cindy Rogers Patton; three children, Patrice (David) Freeman of Acworth, GA, Lee (Jenny) Patton of Dallas, TX, and Melissa Patton of Cleveland; and stepson, Phillip (Alexha) Weaver of Columbus, GA.
