James "Jimmy" V. Still

December 27, 1928 — March 8, 2020

James V. “Jimmy” Still, 91, of Cleveland passed away Sunday, March 8, 2020 in an Ooltewah healthcare facility after a short illness.

Mr. Still was born in Cleveland on Dec. 27, 1928.  He was the son of Stella and Wallace Still.  He was preceded in death by his wife Joan Lovell Still in 2016.  Married for 66 years, the couple raised four daughters in Cleveland, where he retired after 37 years in the Toll Test department of the telephone company and as a licensed electrician.   A Korean war veteran, Mr. Still served with the 278th Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army.

He was proud of his service with the telephone company—first it was Southern Bell, then South Central Bell and then AT&T.  His work enabled him to bring the benefit of communications to isolated people. During his service with the phone company, he was instrumental in many modern changes such as dial service, car telephones and cell service.

A founding member and first president of the Cleveland Amateur Radio Club in the 1950s, Mr. Still held the call letters WA4GJU.  He was widely known as an antique watch and clock repairer and tinkerer. If he couldn’t fix it, it couldn’t be fixed.

A long-time member of the Unity Sunday School at North Cleveland Church of God, Mr. Still was well known for his service in the sound booth where he ran the sound system during Sunday School class.  He recorded the lessons and mailed recorded tape and CDs in excess of 100,000 to those unable to attend services.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Still was preceded in death by daughters, Patricia Still Reynolds of Cleveland, and Luann Still Chappell of Nashville; and by grandchildren Christopher Reynolds and Sarah Reynolds.

Mr. Still is survived by daughters Sandra Bean (Nelson) of Kingwood TX, and Margot Still of Cleveland; brother, C. Kenneth Still (Barbara) of Chattanooga; sisters, Mary Ellen McCoy (Bill) and Linda Massengale, both of Cleveland; grandsons Sam Reynolds (Catherine) of Knoxville and Jason Bean of Kingwood TX; granddaughter Lucie Bean Smith; and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by life-long friend, Glenn Williams of Signal Mountain, Tennessee.

Funeral services for Cleveland native Jimmy Still will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020 at Fike Randolph and Son Funeral Home.   Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Danny Davis, Bill Davidson, Darrin Edwards, Mark Lemons, David Shope and Steve Still serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 12:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home prior to the service.
